Who uses Sitejabber (now SmartCustomer)
Any company with a website, whether it sells online or offline, can register to collect and answer reviews; the site says it keeps listings up so buyers can research any website. Reviewers are customers writing about their own firsthand experience, and owners, employees, and close associates may not review the business.
Claim your profile
- Use the Claim your free profile link on the business section of the site.
- Register for a business account; the site says any business can start for free, with paid plans optional.
- Use the business dashboard to reply to reviews, monitor new ones, and flag problem reviews.
- The site's pages do not describe the verification steps for a claim.
Replying to reviews
Businesses reply to reviews from the business dashboard, and can answer positive and negative reviews alike.
- The site recommends short, polite replies and says not to get defensive or make personal attacks.
- Do not advertise or offer free items in a reply, and never offer an incentive to change or delete a review.
- Do not disclose a reviewer's private details such as an address or phone number.
- If a review contains profanity or breaks the guidelines, flag it instead of replying.
Review rules
In our own words. The official page is the rule that applies.
- Reviews must be based on the reviewer's own firsthand experience, with no duplicates for the same transaction, no fake or paid reviews, and no reviews on behalf of someone else.
- Insider reviews from owners, employees, or close associates are prohibited, as are hate speech, threats, harassment, and lewd material.
- Businesses may invite customers to review but must invite a fair, representative sample; review gating and suppression (asking people to change or remove negative reviews) are banned.
- Offering or accepting anything of value for a business review is prohibited, whether or not disclosed.
- A confirmed violation by a business brings a formal warning whose status is shown on its profile, and after three the business's rating is removed and a permanent banner is added.
Reporting a review
Sitejabber (now SmartCustomer)'s own process, step by step.
- Businesses flag a suspicious review through the account dashboard rather than contacting the reviewer.
- Within 30 days of a review being posted, a business can request verification; the reviewer is contacted, and if they do not respond within 10 business days the review is removed. Free plans can use this twice a month.
- A business can also ask the review team to re-examine a review it believes is fraudulent; the site says this takes about 10 business days and is rarely successful.
- Reviews held for further checks can take up to 30 days, and a business can appeal a moderation decision by email, with appeals usually reviewed within 10 business days.
Tips
- Reply to both positive and negative reviews with short, polite, factual messages.
- Wait before replying if a review upsets you.
- Invite all customers to review, not only satisfied ones.
- Do not ask a reviewer to change or take down a review, including after the problem has been resolved.
- Never post or buy fake reviews or trade reviews with other businesses.

About the numbers
