Replying to reviews
OpenTable's guidance for owners says to respond to OpenTable reviews inside your OpenTable dashboard. Its reputation management product lets restaurants answer OpenTable, Google and Facebook reviews from one place and includes AI-assisted response tools. The pages reviewed do not list step-by-step dashboard instructions.
- OpenTable advises replying to every review, not only positive ones, because answering only praise can look like ignoring criticism.
- Serious allegations, such as staff misconduct or foodborne illness, call for a fast and personal response.
- OpenTable suggests thanking guests by name, acknowledging the specific issue, apologizing once and offering a fix, and moving heated conversations to a private channel.
- It advises against copy-and-paste replies, arguing the facts in public, and defensive or sarcastic wording.
- Replying within 24 to 48 hours is suggested where possible.
- For a review you believe is about a visit that never happened, OpenTable suggests one calm public reply saying you have no record of the visit and inviting the reviewer to contact you.
Review rules
In our own words. The official page is the rule that applies.
- OpenTable says its reviews come only from guests with a completed reservation, and that guests who book through OpenTable are invited to review after they dine.
- OpenTable's owner guidance notes that most review platforms remove only reviews that break their rules, such as fake reviews, hate speech or content unrelated to the restaurant.
- The owner guidance also says offering a discount or freebie in exchange for a review breaks the rules on nearly every platform.
Reporting a review
OpenTable does not publish a process for businesses to report a review. Contact the site through the official page below.
Tips
- Check reviews regularly, and reply promptly and by name where you can.
- Ask guests for reviews soon after the visit, and do not offer discounts or freebies in exchange.
- Move complaints that need detail, such as serious allegations, to a private channel after a short public reply.
- Look for reviews on other sites too, since guests also comment on Google, Yelp, Facebook and Tripadvisor.
