Who uses Lawyers.com
Attorneys and law firms (U.S., Canadian and international lawyers and firms, lawyers in corporate law departments and lawyers in government service can submit basic profiles) and people looking for a lawyer. Client reviews come from people who hired or consulted the lawyer or firm; peer reviews come from other attorneys.
Claim your profile
- Martindale-Hubbell, which publishes the ratings guidance for these listings, offers a free Basic Profile form where you pick the profile type (lawyer, law firm, corporate law department, government, international). The form adds the profile to martindale.com and the Martindale-Hubbell Legal Network; the page does not say directly that it also creates a Lawyers.com listing, so confirm with Martindale-Hubbell.
- Enter personal and firm details, bar admission details, practice areas and education.
- Submit the form; Martindale-Hubbell may contact you to verify the information.
- To change an existing profile, use the change request form and choose the category from the drop-down so it reaches the right department.
- Martindale-Hubbell says its online directories are updated daily.
Replying to reviews
All attorneys and firms can post a one-time written comment next to the feedback on a client review.
- Attorneys cannot choose which reviews appear; they can suppress all of their client review scores and comments (a notice then says the lawyer chose not to display them) by asking in writing at ratings@martindale.com or by calling Customer Support.
- Paid subscribers can pin up to two feedback comments to the top of their review section.
- Martindale-Hubbell says each lawyer or firm is responsible for making sure its use of the ratings complies with the ethics rules that apply to it.
Review rules
In our own words. The official page is the rule that applies.
- Client reviews are free and are submitted from the lawyer's or firm's profile page; reviewers confirm the review by email and must affirm they were a client, though Martindale says it cannot always confirm the relationship.
- Reviews are anonymous, and Martindale does not disclose who wrote one when a lawyer or firm asks, although it may be required to disclose reviewer information in some cases.
- Reviewers are advised not to include personal details or specifics of their case.
- Martindale-Hubbell does not pay people who take part in client reviews, never sells a subscription or listing on the promise of particular reviews, and gives no lawyer preferential treatment.
- Martindale does not take responsibility for the accuracy of comments and may decline to publish a submission; reviews with inappropriate content may be removed.
- Peer Review Ratings of disbarred or suspended lawyers are removed once a state bar notifies Martindale-Hubbell.
Reporting a review
Lawyers.com's own process, step by step.
- Use the "Report Abuse" button next to the review you want Martindale to consider removing.
- For a client review you believe came from someone who was not a client, use the same button.
- Martindale may remove reviews with inappropriate content under its policies.
Tips
- Never reveal client information or confirm someone was a client in a public reply; check your state's ethics rules on confidentiality and keep any response general and polite.
- Check your state bar's advertising rules before displaying ratings or awards.
- Keep the profile information, practice areas and contact details accurate.
- Point satisfied clients to your profile page to leave a review, but do not pay for or script reviews.
