Who uses Avvo
Licensed attorneys use it to claim and update profiles, and consumers use it to research lawyers. Reviewers are people with personal experience of the lawyer, as a client or after a consultation outside Avvo, according to its community guidelines.
Claim your profile
- Enter your name and location exactly as they appear on your state bar registration to find the existing Avvo profile created from public records.
- Complete the verification step to confirm you are a licensed attorney.
- Update your profile with current information.
Replying to reviews
Avvo's support article on negative reviews suggests a brief, professional public response written with future clients in mind, and notes that confidentiality and ethics rules limit what a lawyer can say about a matter.
- Ethics rules on what you may share about a case vary by state, so check your state's rules before replying.
- Acknowledge the concern and state your standards without going into the details of the representation.
- Avvo does not share a reviewer's identity or contact information, even with the lawyer reviewed, outside a formal legal process.
Review rules
In our own words. The official page is the rule that applies.
- A review should reflect the reviewer's own experience with a lawyer they hired or consulted outside Avvo.
- Avvo describes reviews that relay what someone else heard as not helpful.
- Reviews of the lawyer on the other side of a matter, or of a spouse's or family member's lawyer, are not posted.
- Reviewers should not post personal information such as home or email addresses, phone numbers, credit card or Social Security numbers.
- Avvo uses checks such as required registration, automated screening and community flagging, but says it does not verify or investigate reviews or take sides in factual disputes.
- Client reviews do not affect the Avvo Rating, and lawyers cannot pay to improve or remove reviews.
Reporting a review
Avvo's own process, step by step.
- If a review does not meet the community guidelines, or the reviewer appears not to be a client (for example an opposing party), contact Avvo Customer Care to dispute it.
- Customer Care reviews the dispute and may ask the reviewer for more information; the same moderation standards apply whether the lawyer has a free profile or advertises with Avvo.
Tips
- Keep your profile accurate and complete.
- Reply briefly and professionally, and avoid a long rebuttal.
- Ask satisfied clients for genuine reviews over time, without pressuring them.
- Protect client confidentiality in every public statement.
